Local history buffs plan impressive military muster
In what he describes as “a living history event,’ Tecumseh resident Mickey Moulder and company intend to invigorate area residents and claim for Windsor its pride of place in history.
The Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village (CTMHV), located at 6155 Arner Townline, in Essex, hosts the first Southern Ontario Military Muster on August 14-15, 2010. A 12-acre site on the museum property will be transformed to capture impressions of history in demonstrations and re-enactments from Roman Legions to the Vietnam war. About 100 military vehicles are attending the show. Military displays and battle and tactical displays will encompass military history through time, but there will be a special focus on the World War II era, and rightly so.
“Windsor was the arsenal of democracy,” says Mickey, who serves as Vice President of the CTMHV which he’s been involved with for the past 11 years. “This was one of the largest manufacturing sites in the British Empire.” Ford of Canada alone manufactured 40,000 war vehicles, including trucks and universal (bren gun) carriers. These small tanks were tested at what is now Ojibway Park, while other vehicles were tested on the Ford Test Track. Machine guns and components were produced at long gone plants like Kelsey Wheel and Motor City Products. Windsor Airport was even a training centre for pilots.
“Windsor should have its own section in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. Area residents need to grasp that, re-establish our proud history,” Mickey declares.
Collectors from across North America are visiting the region to take part in this event. They’re participating because they are intrigued by this area’s rich connection to military history.
Among the attractions will be helicopter rides and a World War II fly-over on Sunday. Battle re-enactments take place throughout the weekend, where you’ll see the taking of an entrenchment area in World War I and even a War of 1812 scirmish.
“We’re not glorifying war,” he stresses. “It’s showing people in a realistic setting what it’s like to serve your country, and bring to light this area’s contributions. We hear about the battles fought but that connection needs to be made to the manufacturing that was done here,” Mickey concludes.
The Southern Ontario Military Muster is an ambitious and collaborative effort that is bringing together history buffs of every ilk, from period re-enactors to memorabilia collectors who will depict and display 1812, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam artifacts. Never far from their minds are the veterans and the memory of those who carried the flag before us. Veterans will be treated as special guests in the hospitality area and on Saturday night you can join the fun of a 1940’s era swing dance. Visitors can arrive as early as 7:30 am to partake in the pancake breakfast buffet on Saturday, or the full breakfast buffet on Sunday in the CTMHV’s ‘50’s style restaurant. General admission for the military muster is $5 and all vets get in free. There is plenty of parking on site. Tickets for the dance are $10. “We hope to see a lot of people come out to enjoy and learn about the past and better appreciate what we’ve got going for us here in the region. There’s a lot to take pride in,” Mickey sums up.
