New Fire Chief takes post on first of month
by Cheryl Hardcastle
Tecumseh’s new Fire Chief, Ken McMullen, took command of Tecumseh Fire/Rescue on November 1, 2006. The announcement was made at Tecumseh Council’s last meeting, on October 24 where Chief McMullen made a brief appearance to greet Council. McMullen said he was looking forward to the post, which requires him to relocate from Oakville, because the department “is unique in many ways and you have terrific, caring people involved in the service.”

McMullen has 27 years in firefighting, beginning in Winnipeg. He worked up through the ranks and was Fire Chief in Lincoln, Ontario before his last position as Deputy Chief in Oakville.

Outgoing Chief Bob Tapak isn’t going far. He has accepted the Town’s offer to stay on as Chief of Operations since the department is still short of one Deputy Chief. Posting for that position is expected to take place in January, 2007 with Tapak staying on until June, 2007 when the Deputy Chief should be in place.

Mayor Gary McNamara thanked Tapak for staying on to ensure a smooth transition in the department and for coming on as Interim Chief two years ago. “Thank you for keeping the rudder at mid-ship for us,” he said.
