This music camp “the pick” of the summer…
by Cheryl Hardcastle
One hundred and eight students from Windsor and Essex County, under the direction of Rose Jobin, (music director at Holy Names High School), met daily for two weeks this summer to experience making music at its best. Concert band, Jazz Band, Guitar and choir were offered as options at this free music camp which is run by senior music students at Holy Names High School.

Twenty-one music councilors from Holy Names High School volunteered two weeks of the summer vacation to coach grade 7 and 8 students who wished to play an instrument or learn the basics of guitar and choir. Sixty two instrumentalists and 25 guitar and choir students practiced daily and presented a concert on the last day to an audience of pleased family and friends.

For the last 10 years, this music camp has had a history of successful endeavors and has proven to help introduce students not only to the high school scene but also to the Holy Names Music Department which has a reputation for offering musical avenues and experiences such as festivals, trips, parades, community and school performances and broadway to its members. Their performance has also been a highlight of Tecumseh’s Olde Fashion Christmas event. Talent and hard work earned the Holy Names Concert Band and Festival Choir the “Best” Band and Choir awards at the Windsor Kiwanis Music Festival and an invitation to perform at both Provincials and Nationals this year.

The support of this music camp was overwhelming. Thanks so much to the parents, Holy Names Music Parent’s Council and the dedicated music councilors: Kristen Taylor, Andrew Buzzeo & Amber Soulliere – Flute; Sandra Colucci, Melissa Swetech & Britnee Dziver – Clarinet; Michelle Bocian & Jaclyne Ghanam – Saxophone; Robert Carson, Christina Matteis & Joe Elliot-Tenor and Baritone Saxophone; Jaclyne Hannon – Trombone; Melissa Derus, Kevin Carson and Anthony Giglio – Trumpet; Adam D’Andrea and Andrew Johnson – Percussion; Brendan Friel- guitar; Melissa Bowyer, Nikki Hogan & Danielle Clark- Choir.

Holy Names Music Department welcomes all interested students. See you in September.
