Comartin set for fall session
Headed into fall session with the federal Liberal minority government last week, local NDP MP Joe Comartin says his party won’t be arranging any deals this time around as they did in the spring session that helped pass the Liberal budget. “We’re not going to make any special proposals for them to get our support,” the Windsor-Tecumseh MP said last month after an NDP caucus meeting to plan for the next session. Tecumseh Arena marks its 10th Anniversary
A decade ago, the celebrated opening of Tecumseh Arena, was attended by a crowd of 1,800. Comprised of Rink ‘A’, it brought an end to the iceless era that spanned eight years. ( St. Clair Beach Arena, a private operation built by Bob McWilliams, opened in September, 1968 and closed in the spring of 1987. Tecumseh Firefighters host open house for Fire Prevention Week…
Fire truck rides, a chance to try on bunker gear and breathing apparatus, and tours of Tecumseh Fire Rescue Stations No. 1 and No. 2 entice lots of families., The real success of the fire prevention week event is the opportunity to share fire safety and prevention information geared for adults and kids of all ages. Local Legion awards 60 years service
The evening of award recognition on September 28, 2005, also saw Br. 261 award nine bursaries for post secondary education pursuits. The bursary recipients were: Jennifer Daoust, Matthew Deneau, Samantha Deneau, Stacy Fortier, Hanna Gagnon, Brianne Langlois, Brian Managhan, Matthew Thomas and Brandon Thurlby. École Ste-Marguerite-d'Youville celebrated 'la francophonie' this week with a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the flag 'franco-ontarien'. As well, all students received a green bracelet inscribed with 'J'y crois - Je m'engage' . Town leads plans for last piece of Manning
With County Council’s approval given at their last meeting on September 21, Tecumseh is now forging ahead to finish the expansion of Manning Road on the stretch from the VIA/CN tracks north to County Road 22. Fair gas tax share
Essex County Council approved the motion put forward by Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara to split the federal gas tax 80-20% with the lower tier municipalities getting the greater portion. “It’s a fair and equitable split, McNamara told Tecumseh Council on September 27. The previous split was 50-50 between the County of Essex and the lower tier. Among the images of the traditional firefighter is the dalmation - but how did it get to be the fire dog of choice? The Dalmatian has been the fire dog since the fire department used horses. Dalmatians were bred for endurance and stamina. Dalmatians are not fast dogs but are able to run for long periods of time without rest. Wood Carving Museum exhibit
A unique exhibit running at the Windsor Wood Carving Museum until October 27, 2005 features the work of Mary-Ann Jack-Bleach. Originally from South Africa, Jack-Bleach currently resides in London, Ontario. Her exhibit entails thirteen pieces on display. This featured artist studied under many accomplished carvers. Victoria Public School… Salutes Cross Country Runners
Congratulations to all members of the Cross Country Team who participated in the run on Wednesday September 28, 2005 at Lacasse Park. It was great to see that all of our runners from Victoria Pulci School completed the 1.5 km course. Keenan Suthers placed 4th in the novice division where there were over 100 runners! New service by Windsor Family Forum
“The Road Ahead” is a new program for people dealing with substance abuse or relapse who are unable to access other services. This population may include the unemployed, the homeless, people with disabilities, immigrants and those experiencing trauma from abuse. the program has been funded in part by the Green Shield Foundation and will be delivered by Windsor Family forum at its ottawa Street location. • Town Council has supported setting up a committee to establish a family Health Team system in the area. The VON has approached local municipalities to initiate a Health Team family health care proposal that can be submitted to the province for funding. Wheatley-Leamington Health Team is one of the first in the province. The team approach for medical care is well suited to underserviced areas such as ours, Mayor McNamara said, adding that the second round of funding is early next year. ... [read more]

Changes will send WSIB premiums sky high
The Workers Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) policy manual has been amended to include definitions of “full time “ and “part-time” firefighters and “municipal volunteer firefighters.” The new definitions do not account for unionized volunteer firefighters like Tecumseh’s Fire Rescue Department and it will mean a 1000% increase in WSIB premiums for the Town and other municipalities in the province if strong lobbing by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) isn’t successful.
