On August 16, 2010, Tecumseh Transit will begin a new route that makes a Windsor connection at Tecumseh Mall. So that accessing Windsor destinations from Tecumseh (and vice versa) isn’t cost-prohibitive for a round trip, riders transferring from Transit Windsor buses to the Tecumseh bus will be able to do so free of charge provided they present a valid transfer stub. Tecumseh Council approved the changes to the bus service that were recommended by Planning Services at the July 27 Planning and Building Services Committee meeting.
The changes to the bus service are the result of a ridership study and comments received since the service was implemented in December 2009.
The bus operates under contract with First Student Canada and will continue to be a Monday through Saturday 6:00 am to 6:00 pm service.
Where the route used to circuit every half hour (twice an hour), the new expanded route will circuit every hour.
Besides heading to Tecumseh Mall, the bus has added a stop at the commercial plaza on Lesperance Road and the south side of County Road 22, and also at the corner of Brighton and Tecumseh Road as well as Arlington at St. Gregory Road.
While the existing fare schedule remains, monthly bus passes have been approved.
The report and recommendations, prepared by Senior Planner Chad Jeffery includes statistics on ridership. When the bus service was initiated, it was offered for free until January 31, 2010. During that time there was an average of 43 passengers per day and highest single day ridership of 70 passengers. Upon inception of a fare, ridership tapered to a daily average of 15 to 20 passengers and a highest single day ridership of 33.
Highest monthly ridership was in January with a total of 1,140. Lowest monthly ridership was in May with 343 riders. In June the total ridership was 529. Mr. Jeffery’s report noted that there wasn’t any significant differentiation in ridership for any day of the week that the bus operates.
The Town is receiving $204,735 from the Ontario Transit Gas Tax Fund for 2010. The 2010 contract with First Student is $175,639 for the year and the Town spent $97,980 to purchase the new transit bus. (see related article for the new route map.)
