A future without plastic bags may be five cents away
by Cheryl Hardcastle | |

(NC)—Can you put a price on Canada’s natural resources? The Canadian Boreal Initiative (2007) has estimated that the ecosystem services provided by lakes and rivers in the Mackenzie River Basin are worth $153 billion per year to Canadians — greatest value of any land cover type in the Basin. In reality though, we all know that these precious resources are invaluable.

With the support of Indigo Books and Music, WWF-Canada is working to protect the ecological and cultural integrity of the Mackenzie River Basin.

“This area contains 20 per cent of Canada’s boreal forest, three remarkable river deltas, the world’s largest timber wolves and huge populations of ducks, birds and fish, some for whom this area is exclusively their home,” said Robert Powell, director of WWF-Canada’s Mackenzie River Basin Program. “Protecting this unique ecosystem will take a collaborative approach between government agencies, local communities, environmental organizations, First Nations, and corporate partners.”

Indigo Books and Music is joining the effort. On June 21, 2010, the book retailer launched a national program to reduce plastic bag use by charging customers five cents for plastic bags. While the retailer will not profit from the bag fee, partial proceeds collected will support WWF-Canada, including work in the Mackenzie River Basin.
