Baseball in Montreal: more than just memories

Walking into any Montreal metro station on the evening of March 31, many commuters were probably confused to see the unfamiliar sight of baseball fans. Draped in Blue Jays blue and white with smatterings of the old Expos colours, fans packed onto the subway to head to see the Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates face off in the final spring training series at the Olympic Stadium.

Teams take advantage of the NHL’s point system, staying cautious and stalling until they can get a guaranteed one point in overtime. Since a win in overtime, or in the shootout, is worth the same two points as a regulation win, and a loss in this scenario grants one point, there’s no reason to risk losing in regulation and miss out on a point that requires just holding out a few more minutes.

2016-17 McGill Athletics roundup

As the fourth seed in this year’s women’s U Sports basketball tournament, the McGill Martlets defeated the Regina Cougars on March 9, securing the school’s third consecutive trip to the national semi-finals. After a shaky start to the season, the Martlets entered the weekend riding a hot streak, winning nine of their last ten games and undefeated in their last five.

PK’s back, back again

Eight months after the infamous trade that sent shock and anger throughout Montreal, former Habs fan-favourite P.K. Subban returned to the Bell Centre on Thursday, March 2. Tensions between Subban and the Montreal Canadiens’ front office boiled over last June, leading the Nashville Predators and Habs to swap their marquis defencemen.

Fresh off a nine-game winning streak, the Washington Capitals are the team to beat in the East.
