At one point in The Town, Doug MacRay gazes upward at an airplane jetting through the sky, signifying the possibility of life beyond small-town Boston. But the image is as fleeting as the lives of the bank-robbing bandits the film portrays, and it seems as though MacRay (played by a melancholy Ben Affleck) is in this town to stay.
TaCEQ Gears up for a Second Year
The Quebec Student Roundtable (QSR, or TaCEQ in French), a provincial student lobbying group, is gearing up its campaign for the coming school year.
TaCEQ represents the student associations of the undergraduate and graduate students of Laval University, the graduate students of the University of Sherbrooke, and the Students’ Society of McGill University. According to SSMU Vice-President External Myriam Zaidi, the organization represents roughly 65,000 students in total.
Hiring tenure-track professors the way to go
The Tribune commends McGill’s commitment to increasing its number of tenure-track staff as part of its academic renewal program. It is a welcome shift from a North American trend of reducing tenure-track professors in favour of course lecturers hired on short-term contracts. Confusion in the campus press, stemming in part from the ambiguous and non-committal language of the McGill budget, had led many to believe that McGill was also reducing its tenure-track hires for the foreseeable future. However, so far as we can tell from the budget, and through clarification by campus administrators, this is not the case.
AUS VP Events Londe steps down
Arts Undergraduate Society Vice-President Events Nampande Londe resigned her position on Tuesday, citing personal reasons.
Londe had recently come under fire for allowing Arts Frosh to run a budget deficit and faced the possibility that AUS Council would impeach her. But she and AUS President Dave Marshall denied that this was the reason for her resignation.
Undefeated Redmen Lacrosse Team Pound Toronto
The varsity lacrosse Redmen delivered a walloping 12-3 victory over the University of Toronto’s Varsity Blues at Forbes Field Sunday.
The Blues started things off quickly, taking early leads. But once the game settled down and the refs eased up on their whistles, McGill was able to control possession and the game. The Redmen scored four unanswered goals for a 7-3 halftime lead, and cemented the win by outscoring Toronto 5-0 in the second half.
Toronto Loudmouth Needs to Walk the Walk
Dion Phaneuf is a loud guy. You can have endless debates about his abilities, about his paycheque, or about his girlfriend (notorious puck bunny Elisha Cuthbert), but there’s no debating his mouth. And while his brashness may have excited the Toronto Maple Leafs enough for them to name him captain, it has also gotten him into a lot of trouble. I am almost certain that a statement he made last week in particular will come back to haunt him: “It’s definitely a playoff team. Our goal going into the start of this year is to make the playoffs,” he said. “Anything short of that is unacceptable.”

Two thousand six hundred McGill students wandered the halls of the Shatner Building last Tuesday and Wednesday during Activities Night to learn about the different clubs and services tht the university has to offer. Fill the Stadium 2010
This Friday’s home game against Concordia (2-1) is McGill Athletics’ Fill the Stadium 2010 event. The game starts at 7 p.m., and will have a pre-game party starting at 5 p.m. with $2 food and drinks, a barbecue, and live music.
A Letter of Apology to the Ottawa Emergency Services
Last weekend, my boyfriend and I decided to take my family’s newly purchased boat out on the Ottawa River for a romantic sunset cruise. We had wine and a small snack, and I must admit, I thought I might even get a little lucky that night. Instead, we spent at least two extra hours stuck in the middle of the river with a dead engine, at which point I decided to call the Ottawa Emergency Services.
