CAMPUS: 4Floors postponed

The recent events at Dawson College caused the Students’ Society to reschedule the traditional September 4Floors party in Shatner last week. However, after low attendance in previous years, many are wondering if 4Floors can ever be revived to its previous glory days.

The cancellation was “out of respect for those who are personally affected by this tragic event,” according to the SSMU website, which went on to encourage anyone affected by the shootings to be with friends and family.

The event has been tentatively rescheduled for Sept. 29. “I don’t want to push it back any farther than this month,” said SSMU Vice-president Communications and Events Gill Prendergast.

Last year, the infamous 4Floors party was revamped and named “Ménage à Trois,” with only three floors and a red-light district theme, but the event didn’t quite live up to its former glory. However, those who did attend enjoyed themselves.

“I might go this year,” said Mike Garfinkle, U2 Chemistry. “I liked it a lot last year.”

This year’s event has returned to the original name, but has a new theme.

“Last year no one knew what it was,” said Prendergast. “We went back to the name because it’s famous.”

Although the party has been branded in the past as a freshman event, this year’s organizers are hoping to attract a more diverse population. Drink specials are available with Frosh shirts or mugs from any Frosh, from any year.

“We want to get back to the old school way of doing things,” Prendergast said. “We’re not trying to do anything super fancy because it’s not super fancy. It ran well when it was just about being gross and [having] cheap beer.”

The theme is “Tagged,” which alludes to the graffiti party that will spread through the building on Friday.

Attendees are encouraged to wear white T-shirts or undershirts, or pick up a free SSMU Frosh T-shirt at the door. They will then be able to use highlighters that show up under ultraviolet light to draw on others throughout the night. The person with the most ‘tags’ at the end of the party will win a prize.

However, the UV lights will not be in every room and party-goers must track down a light before they can see what has been written on their shirt.

But will this year’s event be any more of a success than last year?

“Last year we had just put SSMU Frosh on and I think that everyone was just tired. This year it’s later, so hopefully people will be ready to party,” Prendergast said.

Prendergast also tried to advertise the event widely, utilizing Internet sensations like YouTube and Facebook by posting a video made by TV McGill.

But many McGill students are still unaware that the event exists.

“I’ve never heard of it, so I probably won’t go,” said Michelle Roseman, U2 Psychology.

The potential for free alcohol and prizes may also draw out more people.

“We’re trying to get floor fellows to bring down their entire floor,” Prendergast said. “If they do, they’ll get a bottle of liquor that we’ve gotten as promotions because we’ve bought so much.” There are 12 bottles available to be won.

There is a PSP to be given away as well to the person with the most enthusiasm. The competition may involve a dance-off.

“It’s hard to judge this kind of thing, but whoever is having the most fun wins,” Prendergast said.
